Vodafone offer half price text messages, but it's not a good offer...

My wife had a pay-as-you-go phone which she used primarily for text messages. As a Christmas present I offered to upgrade her to a contract phone. Having two phones already on contract with Vodafone I thought it best to add her phone to that contract. Vodafone offered half price text messages (6p each) if you brought them in lots of either: 50 for £3.00, 150 for £9.00 or 300 for £18.00. After a month’s use we found that she was making about £200.00 worth of text messages a month. I rang Vodafone and asked for five times the £18.00 package. I was politely told that I could only have one package per month. I said well,  can I have an £18.00 package,  a £9.00 package and a £3.00 package? No you can’t,  you can only have one package. So I said to the chap well that’s unfair.  He said no it’s not, it’s what we do. So I said well if you bought a phone and you understood that you could have text messages at half price if you bought them in advance and then when you came to buy them you were told you could only have one lot at £18.00 therefore all the rest of your text messages would be at the full price would you be happy?
He said well that’s the way Vodafone do it. I asked to speak to someone else and he said I would have to write a letter. I said I live in Newbury so I’m going to the office to see someone.
He said the complaints department wasn’t in Newbury. So I said well I’m going there anyway.

We must confess that we are not familiar with Vodafone's advertising policies and the various gimmicks they offer to incite and tempt you to switch to them but we have sent them a copy of the above complaint and we have asked them to explain it all to us.
Hopefully they do reply and then we will all be wiser next time

Vodafone took a long time to reply but in the end they did and they have just sent us the following letter:
Thank you for your letter dated l1th February 2004, regarding the query that Mr. Tony Hine presented to you. Please accept our apologies for the delay in replying to your correspondence.
Our Press Office is aware that this query has been presented to us and has advised that you may direct any future media enquiries to the Public Relations Department at Vodafone Headquarters. (Please see address overleaf).
Due to data protection restrictions, we are prevented from disclosing details concerning a customer’s account to a Third party, without first receiving written authorisation from the account holder to do so.
Our ‘Perfect Fit’ price plans are designed to fit the way most of our customers use their mobile phones within our market range. ‘Perfect Fit’ price plans give the customer the opportunity of choosing a price plan that suits their needs and that also gives them the best value for their money.
The price plans are structured into three steps:
1. You first choose an option to fit the time of day when you most make your calls.
2. You then decide on a band of minutes that suits how much you are likely to use your mobile phone for calls.
3. H you use your mobile phone for text messaging, you can choose one of three optional half price text packs to fit your text messaging needs.
These details are clearly laid out in our brochures, information in our retail stores and on our web site. For further information you can view this on our web site, please go to the following URL:

If you wish to use any information or links on our web site, please contact us first as the details on the web site are under copyright.
We are currently unable to offer a high usage text price plan to match Mr Hines needs, however we will be contacting the customer directly to see how we can help.
Please contact the customer for details on the resolution. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
We appreciate all feedbacks, as it helps us to improve our service.

We notified Mr. Hine that we had received the above letter and we have asked him to let us know what solution Vodafone have offered.

If he shares it with us we will add it to our site

In the meantime:

Just remember, nothing is for free and nobody will give you anything unless there is an advantage to them

Regretfully, Mr. Hines did not have the courtesy to come back to us and we consequently have to assume that Vodafone have offered him a resolution which was to his advantage.
