| Several ‘hardened’ drinkers have recently asked us to look into the ‘Pedigree’ brand of beer which is now sold in the Wetherspoon chain of public houses at substantially lower prices than in other outlets, including the pubs owned by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, who inherited this brand when they took over the Marstons Brewery. The general complaint was that the beer did not compare with the ‘Pedigree’ sold elsewhere and that it tasted like a watered down version of this known brand. As we do not have the expertise or the knowledge to comment on these complaints we sent a letter to the Wolverhampton & Dudley Brewery explaining the complaint and asking them to let us have their views and comments on this subject. | This is a copy of the letter we wrote to them Dear Sirs, We have been approached by several ‘Bitter’ drinkers regarding the Marston’s ‘Pedigree’ brand which is currently sold by the Wetherspoon pub chain. The general opinion and view is that the ‘Pedigree’ sold by Wetherspoon is not comparable to the usual ‘Pedigree’ and that it tastes like a watered down version of this known brand with most of them saying that they usually drink ‘Pedigree’ but would not touch it again in Wetherspoon’s. Bearing in mind that this brand is marketed by you as the ‘most important brand from Marston's’ and is described as ‘Premium cask-conditioned beer’ we obviously would like to hear your opinion on this subject. We have been asked to publish this complaint on our website but we feel that it would not be fair to you or Wetherspoon if we would do so without having given you the opportunity to confirm or deny these accusations. We trust that you will provide the information we have asked for and we look forward to your early reply. |
| Regretfully - Dudley & Wolverhampton breweries never replied to our letter and we leave it to you to decide if these complaints are justified or not. We are not experts in beer brewing and without any comments from the brewery or from Wetherspoons we can only leave this matter in suspension, perhaps one day some expert will put our mind at rest | |
